Toyota 4runner steering wheel shakes when applying brakes. Primarily with the braking. When i talked to people and searched online i was told that it could be the rotors. Mine was more of a side to side shaking.
There are plenty of other issues that can cause the steering wheel to wobble. I checked the wheel bearings first. A brake rotor or disc is the part that is squeezed by brake pads when braking.
I changed the brake pads because they needed to be changed but i dont think it made any of a difference. But if your 4runner is only shaking when braking thats a pretty good indication that its a brake related problem and its usually the rotors causing the issue. Upon removong them and spinning them at low rpm usually 675 800 rpm or less on an on car lathe would show wobble on the rotors when turning.
Normally with warped rotors you will feel the brake pedal pulsing and feel the shake come through the steering wheel. In most cases this issue is caused by warped or unevenly worn front brake rotors discs although there could be other reasons. Unevenly worn or warped brake discs rotors can cause the steering wheel to shake when brakes are applied.
But when i had the rotors checked they were fine. Every time i brake my 4runner shakes. Nothing warped or anything.
